| Title of the novel….. | |||||
|
The title of a literary work is just like the
sign-board of a shop reveals the contents of the
shop, in the same way, an apt and appropriate
title must give an idea of the subject matter of
the work. The title, ‘The Guide’ is quite apt as
it refers to the role played by its hero, Raju.
The title shows that the novel deals with the
life and career of Raju, the center of the novel.
As the title indicates, and we see in the novel,
Raju is a guide in a number of ways.
Raju begins his career as a stall-keeper at
malgudi railway station. He is an intelligent
observer of men and manners. He is very soft
spoken and everybody is impressed by him. His
fame spreads and he is popularly known
as ‘Railway Raju’. He is convincing enough to
make the tourists put blind faith in him. Even a
dry person like Marco is impressed by him. Thus,
Raju’s first role as a guide is that of a tourist
guide.
The next role taken by raju of a guide is that of
a love guide. He knows how to attract Rosie
towards him. He uses Rosie both at physical and
mental level. In no time, he changes their
romantic relationship into physical one. No
doubt, Raju develops physical relations with
Rosie, but never against her will. In this
respect also, he is a model guide, as lessons in
the art of love making may be learned from his
bold compliments, smooth talk and flattery.
The next role of guide fixed for raju is that of
a theatre manager. It is Raju who launches Rosie
as a dancer manager her affairs so ably that soon
she becomes a dancing star. Then, because of
doing a forgery, Raju is put into prisoner. There
also he takes the role of a tear and popular
guide. He becomes an object of lesson for his co-
prisoner. There in prison also he takes the role
of a guide.
Raju’s destiny forces him to play the role of a
guide on the spiritual level also. After leaving
the jail, he is taken by the villagers as a
saint. He himself accepts this role readily. How
ever, in the end, Raju becomes a martyr for the
sake of poor villagers.

police party. So, in the end, The Ragged Man

There are only two main characters in the play -
The Ragged Man and The Sergeant. The whole story
revolves round there two characters. The Ragged
Man is infect an active Irish freedom fighter.
Who has escaped from the prison. The placards
pasted on the walls reveal that he has dark hair,
dark eyes and smooth face.
The escaped prisoner appears on the scene in the
guise of a poor balled singer. He is wearing torn
and patched clothes. It isn’t possible to guess
his background. But he is clever enough to hide
his passion for freedom.
The Ragged Man is a good judge of man. He easily
understands the working of the sergeant’s mind.
He frightens him by saying that the escaped
prisoner is a very dangerous man and that once he
killed a sergeant just with the piece of stone.
In this way, he makes the sergeant to ask him to
sit with him.
The Ragged Man is a very tactful person. Slowly
but surely, he starts working the patriotic
feelings in the sergeant’s heart. He begins to
sing a patriotic song and knowingly misses a line
in it. The sergeant correct him by supplying the
line he had missed. The sergeant accepts that in
his youth he was also a patriot. Thus, The Ragged
Man succeeds in arousing the feelings of
patriotism in his heart.
The Ragged Man is a very grateful person. When
the sergeant helps him to run away, he promises
to repay his help. In short, The Ragged Man or
the escaped prisoner is true patriot. He can do
any thing to arouse the feelings of patriotism in
his people. He considers it like he Rising of the
Moon in a dark night.
